Your Style – High-Waisted Bikinis

Written by , Posted in Swimwear

Elizabeth Taylor.

Marilyn Monroe.

Sophia Loren.

Taylor Swift. [one of these things is not like the others?]

According to your emails, these are the stars you want to channel by styling the high-waisted swimsuit. Formerly popular amongst Old-Hollywood elite, the high-waist, retro-style bikini is making a comeback with stars like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. And fittingly, the vintage-inspired swimsuit has become the must-try style for this Summer 2010 season.

With the aforementioned style icons in mind, I’d like to share with you a few of my favourite high-waisted bikini designs, two of which have already been featured in Get the Look.

  1. The fabric is nearly weightless and it wears like second skin — these are just two of the reasons I LOVE J.Crew’s jersey Lomellina® high-waist bikini. Such a simple design that styles stunning, this high-waist bikini is available in five vintage-inspired colours. The ruched banding is figure-flattering, and this swimsuit offers maximum coverage in the two most important areas: Tummy and tush. Retails for $56, J.Crew.
  2. As if a high-waisted bikini wasn’t sassy enough, add to the style a sharp leopard print and you’ve got a witty statement piece to wear on the water. Diane von Furstenberg’s leopard-print high-waist swimsuit looks vintage through-and-through. The red-based colour, all-over gathering, and tarty print make it a must-have. And it’s made in Italy, so you know the quality is unmatched. Bottoms retail for $140, Bergdorfs.
  3. Last, but certainly not least, let’s check this off-white and black abstract print bikini by Michael Kors. It’s ultra-glamourous and stays the most true to Old-Hollywood style out of these swimsuit picks. Known for his classic looks, MK doesn’t hold back with this high-waisted bikini design. The timeless style features a v-neck top and thin straps, and high-waisted, full-coverage brief bottoms. Swimsuit retails (on sale for a limited time) for $177, regular $265, Neiman Marcus.

J.Crew Lomellina® Twist Knot Bandeau Top and High-Waisted Ruched Bottoms

Written by , Posted in Swimwear

Happy Friday! And to all you Canadians, happy awesome start to what looks like a beautiful long weekend! As we celebrate Victoria Day, I’m sure many of you will be beaching, cottaging, or maybe even staycationing at home.

Anyone looking to soak up some sun and work on their tan, check this out. I’m a huge fan of J.Crew’s Lomellina® swim-wear collection. The luxe line’s twist knot bandeau top and high-waisted ruched bottoms have caught my eye and captured my heart. Love the vintage style of this suit! And for women worried about bottom coverage, these bottoms have you covered. While I’m looking at it in classic copper, this swimsuit is available in fog, wild pacific, vibrant purple, and black.

Jersey wears like second-skin, so you’ll have no problem walking with confidence in this two-piece. To infuse your own personality to the vintage look, add some accessories like your favourite fedora, a big bauble necklace, and your signature sunnies.

Peace out!

J.Crew Lomellina® Twist Knot Bandeau Top, about $47, J.Crew

J.Crew Lomellina® High-Waist Ruched Bottoms, about $45, J.Crew

Lounge Lover Self-Tie Jersey Robe

Lounge Lover Self-tie jersey robe

Admittedly, I’m more a fan of a lounge robe done in 100 percent purest cashmere, but really.

This jersey robe by Lounge Lover is absolutely divine.

Perfect for those lazy Saturday mornings, paired with tights and a simple tee, this Lounge Lover’s robe is a super soft blend of jersey infused with just a hint of cashmere.

Lounge Lover self-tie jersey robe, marked down to $117.60, Net-A-Porter

Ask Hope Robertson: What Type of Swimsuit Should I Buy?

From Left: Melissa Odabash suit, Lisa Marie Fernandez, Issa

Hope – I’m traveling to the Caribbean in February. Any suggestions where I can find a unique swimsuit?

Suffering from a mid-winter cold, I’m dreaming of a beach getaway.

Depending on your budget, I’d check these suits by Issa, Lisa Marie Fernandez, and Melissa Odabash.

I’m seriously loving Lisa Marie’s exclusive for Net-A-Porter (centre). With the look of the leather, this rubber swimsuit doubles as an edgy corset top. When you return from the Caribbea, you can make the Leigh Maillot work-friendly by pairing it with a pencil skirt and smart cardi.

Keeping it classic, Issa’s color-blocked, plunge-front swimsuit might be perfect for your tropical vacation (right). While I’ve never been one for one-piece suits, this swimsuit dips low in the front and back. The strategic color-blocking crossover detailing in front whittles the waist for an all-over flattering look.

Annnd, if you’re feeling a little more Paris Hilton, channel the heiress with Melissa Odabash’s marrakech embellished cut-out suit (left). The shiny silver-tone embellishment is balanced with a rich magenta hue. This is not for the un-brave.

Issa color-block plunge-front swimsuit, $250, Net-A-Porter

Melissa Odabash’s marrakech swimsuit, $345, Net-A-Porter

Retro Style Swimsuits

VS retro swimVS retro style swimsuit

They certainly weren’t created with tanlines in mind, but I still love these adorable vintage-inspired swimsuits by Very Sexy® Victoria’s Secret.

The retro balconet and bandeau tops are spot-on style for this summer. Both tops have a chic sensibility that is a refreshing departure from typical triangle bikini tops. These tops also feature removable halter straps and underwire support.

The bottoms of both suits are similar with ultra high-waist designs. I especially love the gold-buttoned pockets on the bandeau suit.

And price tags? You can’t beat a swimsuit that sells for less than 100 dollars.

It’ll make it easier to slip into a swimsuit this year if you make like a tiger.

Red Carter’s tiger print swimsuit will instantly transform you into a feline with a sleek, smooth body. You’ll be gliding gracefully across the sand in no time. Meow.

BCBG Max Azria swimsuit

It may not be the best suit for tanning, but it still makes me say “Mmmhmm.” So sassy, so sequin-y, so perfect for vacation on the Cote d’Azur this winter.
