Check the bevy of beauties featured in today’s Trend-Spotting: Gwyneth Paltrow, Kim Kardashian, Michelle Williams, and Camilla Belle. This glam and gorgeous quartet of style stars work several variations of the little white dress with seemingly complete ease. And even though you may not have your own personal stylist, replicating your favourite star’s style isn’t really that hard (all you have to do is stomach the cost of a Monique Lhuillier cut-out dress, *gulp*). What can prove difficult is finding the right shade of white for your complexion, and the right white dress for your shape.

If dressing in white — in the winter months, no less — puts you in a panic, take heart and consider these simple rules:

  • Snow white wears best on women with tanned skin and darker hair; winter white and ivory wear best on women of a fair complexion.
  • Remember: Blue eyes or brown, wear white on the town; green eyes, not blue? It’s ivory for you.
  • Keep the look soft by accoutring your little white dress with a neutral-coloured clutch and shoes.
  • Jewelry should be understated: Wear simple earrings and one necklace or bracelet (not both).
I love the layered jacquard skirt and structured style of this Camilla and Marc silk-faille dress ($750, Net-A-Porter). A mini dress that will make maximum impact, the nude colouring of this Camilla and Marc sheath is a nice alternative to harsh white. The cap sleeves and padded peak shoulders will work wonders for your upper body, and they’re balanced by a tasteful tulip mini skirt. The slash neck detailing eliminates the need for crazy accessories.
Also on my radar is the sleeve shift dress by Eliza J (about $208 CDN, Nordstrom). Typically a challenging style, the layered organza ruffles around the shoulders are easy to wear thanks to the straight silk body of the dress. The boat neck of this Eliza J dress is flattering, and helps to soften the structured look. A conservative length, this silk shift dress falls just above the knees.
Finally, for the woman on a budget, this Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique sheath dress is a classic (about $93 CDN, Nordstrom). The rectanglur paillettes add a a subtle shimmer to this ivory dress. The empire waist and scoop neckline are classics; this dress would flatter alm ost any figure.
